Polperro Geotechnical Coring

During September 2008 South West Water (SWW) released plans to construct and lay a new sewerage outfall pipe out of the small Cornish fishing village of Polperro. Fugro Seacore was contracted to carry out the geotechnical coring in order to provide data for the consultants to design the outfall for SWW.

In February 2009 Fugro Seacore mobilised their Skate 2D jack up platform complete with the CR2 mast and full geotechnical coring suite Geobor-S, along with all other sampling tool equipment. After adding the final leg sections in Par Docks the mobilisation was complete and the rig was towed into position. Due to the challenging seabed conditions (steeply dipping shales and slates) and proximity to the rocks, diver assistance was required to confirm safe footings for the legs prior to jacking-up the platform clear of the water.

Fugro Seacore successfully achieved 95% core recovery on average across the 5 boreholes (BH), with 4 out of the 5 BH locations hitting rock head at seabed level. In less than one week the site phase of the work was complete and the rig was safely towed back to the Helford River where she was demobilised.
